The Garrett Trout show was in full effect Friday night at Littlestown's Memorial Field.

The senior spearheaded the offensive effort as the Thunderbolts defeated visiting eight-seed Annville-Cleona, 27-10, in the first round of the District 3 Class AA playoffs.

"This is a huge night not only for this team, but this town," Trout said. "We've all been waiting for this playoff win for a few years."

Littlestown had gone three years without a playoff win, losing four playoff games in a row and making three consecutive District 3 first-round exits.

"These kids just don't want it to end, man," Littlestown head coach Mike Lippy said. "It was disappointing the last three years, when you get to the playoffs, you want to do something."

Annville-Cleona certainly proved it could play with the big boys in a scoreless first quarter.

The Little Dutchmen put together two drives deep into Littlestown territory in the opening stanza, but one was short-circuited by a fumble, and the other ended on downs.

"I knew we were going to catch them a little by surprise with how physical we were," Annville-Cleona head coach Terry Lehman said, " but in the first half, we were in the red zone three times and came away with three points."

The Thunderbolts wasted little time showcasing their athletic ability in the second quarter.

Just over a minute in, the Bolts faced a third-and-15 from the Annville-Cleona 34.

Lippy called a toss right to tailback Lucas Reynolds, a play Littlestown had run successfully several times early on.

However, after receiving the toss, Reynolds was given the option to throw the ball, and he hooked up with Trout running free in the secondary for the game's first touchdown.

The Dutchmen got on the board when a long drive ended in a short Matt Light field goal, but Trout found a way to out-do himself on the next drive with a sprawling one-handed catch as he slid to the ground in the front corner of the end zone for a 14-3 lead.

"That's by far the most exciting catch I've ever made. I just reached out for it," Trout said.

Trout finished the game with eight catches for 184 yards, the most postseason receiving yards by a Littlestown player since Matt Koontz had 234 yards against Delone in 2009.

After the defense forced a three-and-out, Dustin DeGroft took the handoff on a basic iso play to the right and burst into open field for an electrifying 83-yard score to make it 21-3.

The Dutchmen fought back early in the third.

Troy Alexander intercepted Littlestown quarterback Trevor Hildebrand on the first series of the third quarter.

Quentin Hall capitalized on the field position, taking the handoff at the 40 and crashing off a tackler at the 20 on the way to a touchdown that made it 21-10.

Jeff Garman's first two field goals of the year put the game away.

"It's nicer to get the field goal kicker a chance to sharpen that toe up," Lippy said. " You never know when you're going to need him going forward."

Littlestown will host Wyomissing on Friday evening in round two. The Spartans ended the Bolts' season in the first round each of the last two years.
