The top four seeds stay alive in both the AA and AAA portions of the YAIAA boys' tennis tournament, which got under way on Friday.

Dallastown and South Western will each send three to the AAA quarterfinals while Biglerville, Delone Catholic, York Catholic and York Suburban each send two the the AA quarterfinals.

In AAA, top-seeded Anthony Miserendino of South Western started his pursuit of a second straight AAA title with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against New Oxford's Joel Luckenbaugh in the first round. He then followed it up by beating another Colonial in Joey Stiles, 6-0, 6-0.

In AA, Cole Herzing of Biglerville proved his worth as a top seed, advancing to Saturday's quarterfinal with a 6-0, 6-1 victory vs. York Suburban's Matthew Manzella in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.

The upset of the day happened in AAA, as sixth-seeded Hunter Brown of Central York fell to South Western's Ben Sentz, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Sentz then used that momentum to take out a tired Alex Meckley, 6-0, 6-1. Meckley won his marathon first match against Spring Grove's Grant Wierman 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-3). Sentz reward is a match against teammate Miserendino.

Also advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals are Red Lion's Sam Innerst, Susquehannock's Kaltrin Bullaj, South Western's Quin Meyer and a trio of Dallastown players in Kyle Salaga, Payce Berridge and John Schmitt.


Innerst, the No. 3 seed, advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Dan Ferraro and a 6-0, 6-1 win against Chris Maderitz in the first and second rounds, respectively. He will face Salaga, who won 6-0, 6-0, vs. Northeastern's Logan Fries and 6-3, 6-4 against teammate Nick Barley.

Meyer and Bullaj will face off in the bottom half of the bracket as the No. 5 and No. 4 seeds, respectively. Meyer advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 win vs. Susquehannock's Shane Bookhultz and 6-0, 6-0 vs. Central York's Josh Strickler. Bullaj advanced after a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win against South Western's Michael Fabrick and a 6-0, 6-1 win vs. another Mustang, Joe Harrison.

The final AAA quarterfinal is an all-Wildcat affair between unranked Berridge and second-seeded John Schmitt. Berridge won, 6-0, 6-0, over Susquehannock's Jake Shenk in the first round then upset eighth-seeded Mike Gruver, 6-2, 6-4, to make the quarters. Schmitt cruised against Red Lion's Chase McKnight, 6-0, 6-0, and Central York's Evan Lehigh, 6-0, 6-1.

Over in AA, Herzing will face fifth-seeded Evan Staub of Delone Catholic, who beat Sam Atkinson, 6-1, 6-0, in his second-round match. They will be joined in the top half of the bracket by York Catholic No. 3 seed Adam Hack and York Suburban No. 6 seed Elliot Diehl. Hack advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 second-round win against teammate Tim Hartinger, while Diehl advanced with a 6-3, 6-0 win vs. Delone's Eric Hippensteel.

York Catholic's Sam Hernandez crashed the quarterfinal party with an upset win against teammate Matthew Koury, the No. 7 seed, and will face Delone's Adam Fisher, the No. 4 seed. Fisher beat teammate Matt Juchno, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round.

The final quarterfinal pairing will be unseeded Evan Foster of Biglerville going up against York Suburban's No., 2 seed, Michael Hogg. Foster advanced with a 6-0, 6-4 win against Delone's Ben Gutierrez in the first round then upset Hanover's eighth-seeded Cullen Rosenbrien, 6-2, 6-3. Hogg, meanwhile, made quick work of teammate Michael Peck, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round.

Action resumes at 9 a.m. today at South Western, where both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested in both classifications.
