HERSHEY -- The medal is still there for the taking, but it just won't be gold.

A game Bermudian Springs team reached Friday's semifinal round of the PIAA Class AA Team Wrestling Tournament but was overpowered by national-ranked Bethlehem Catholic, 48-9.

The Eagles can still earn a team medal in this morning's consolation round. A win in the 11 a.m. match versus the winner of Chestnut Ridge and Central Columbia puts them into the consolation bracket final, guaranteeing hardware to take back to York Springs.

In Class AAA, Spring Grove went 1-1 for the day, ending its historic dual meet season by dropping a 34-18 decision to Parkland. The Rockets, reaching Giant Center for the first time in program history, end the season 25-3. That win total is a record for the program.

Despite the blowout loss, Eagle coach Dave McCollum was looking at the bright side of things.

"We wrestled real hard and gave it everything we had. ... (Bethlehem Catholic) has too many hammers," he said. "I'm real happy we made it to the last day of states again."

Tristan Sponseller (170), Sam McCollum (220) and Briton Shelton (145) were the lone Eagle winners against the 16-0 Golden Hawks, the two-time defending state champs.

Bermudian (26-6) reached the semifinals with a 34-30 over District 9 champions Redbank Valley on Friday. Eagle freshman Bayley Oberlander came up with a big fall at 103 to give the YAIAA Division II champions the cushion it needed, as the Bulldogs won the final four bouts.

The squad finds itself in the same position as last year, needing a win for a medal but with one major difference, according to McCollum.

"We came all the way back through wrestlebacks. I think we were tired. And Brookville was waiting in the stands when we came off the mat," he said. "This time, we'll be the ones waiting. Hopefully, that will give us a little edge."

For Spring Grove, Friday started with a convincing 33-11 victory over District 1 runner-up Downingtown East, winning the first seven matches to open up a 26-point lead.

However, the evening match was a different animal for the YAIAA Division I champs, as the Trojans won nine of 14 bouts, recording bonus points in four of those victories.

Spring Grove coach Tony Miller was pleased with his team's performance despite the loss.

"I'm proud of the kids. We didn't stop at all," he said. "We got the matchups we wanted (against Parkland). We had them scouted and the kids knew what to do. We just lost."

Mason Bentzel (145) opened the match with a tough ultimate tiebreaker victory over Mike Marano. After six scoreless periods, the Rocket junior had choice in the 30-second tiebreaker and rode the Parkland senior for the 1-0 decision.

Austin Barley (160), John Gross (170), Alex Guinn (285) and Alec Zorbaugh (120) were the other winners for Spring Grove.

Bentzel, 3-0 for the tournament, thought about what might have been after a 1-2 trip to Hershey.

"If the bracketing was a little different, I think we could have surprised some people and maybe slipped out of here with a medal," Bentzel said. "Next year, we'll have a bunch of solid seniors. I think we've got a chance to make it back."

Wrestling is far from over with the individual postseason approaching, but Miller knows this senior class has already made its mark.

"This senior class has always been about (achieving) milestones like most wins (in a year). (Milestones) are always in the back of their minds," he said.
