After tying Spring Grove in two of their last three meetings, the South Western boys' swimming and diving team was glad to be in the confines of its own pool when the YAIAA Division I rivals faced each other Thursday evening.
This time, the Mustangs left nothing to chance.
With first-place-second-place sweeps in the second and fourth events, South Western opened a lead that grew too big for the Rockets to overcome, and the Mustangs went on to a 103-77 victory.
"Sometimes the best thing you can do is just jump out on them," Mustangs coach Bill Sterner said.
"They came out ready to get us and they got us," Spring Grove coach Peggy Kile said. "We came out flat, and those first two events took it out of us."
The night wasn't a total loss for Kile and the Rockets, as Spring Grove handily won the girls' meet, 124-62.
South Western's Jordan Grim won the 200 individual medley in 2:07.05 and teammates Nathan Mart (23.57) and Kieran Koehler (23.67) went one-two in a close 50 free, giving the Mustangs a 40-22 lead.
"We knew coming in here it was going to be a tight meet," Mart said. "We knew after the tie last year we had to come in and go right from the start and start winning races."
Andrew Feeser (157.55) increased the lead to 20 points after he won the boys' diving before the Rockets' Taylor Myers ended the run with a 58.45 to win the 100 butterfly.
But Mart (51.52) got his second win, this time in the 100 free, as did Grim (56.43) in the 100 backstroke. Koehler got a victory of his own in the 100 breaststroke after swimming a 1:05.60.
"I have noticed all year long in practice, out of practice and during meets we have been comfortable," Grim said.
Sterner noticed his team was ready for the opening meet of the division season, but he cautioned things won't get any easier.
"Right now we are undefeated," he said of his 5-0 overall, 1-0 YAIAA boys. "We go against Central (York) next week, and that will be tough. At least we have some momentum."
Spring Grove's Jacob Jenkins (5:11.71) won the 500 free, and the Rockets scored both the 200 and 400 free relays. It was the first loss of the season for the squad, which fell to 5-1, 0-1.
Rockets sophomore Abby Kling was the only double-winner in the girls meet, taking the 200 free (2:03.45) and 100 fly (1:06.21). Emma Hoffnagle (200 IM), Alexis Cable (50 free), Katelyn Miller (100 free), Ashton Miller (500 free), Rebecca Miller (100 back) rounded out Spring Grove's individual winners.
The Rockets opened a 58-36 lead after the 100 fly and increased their margin after each of the final six events.
"We are fortunate to have a lot of depth with our girls," Kile said. "We have versatility and a willingness to do what needs to be done."
Spring Grove improved to 3-2, 1-0.
Alison Sell (100 breast) and Maison Hammen (diving) scored victories for South Western (2-3, 0-1).
"I looked at what they did against Dover. They are pretty solid," Sterner said of the Rockets. "But my girls swam well tonight. We had a number of best times.
