2012 Fall All-Star, Division I Girls' Tennis, Katie Wagner, Susquehannock, player of the year, singles and doubles all-star submitted

It's safe to say Susquehannock's Katie Wagner lived up to expectations this season.

The junior girls' tennis player wrapped up her third campaign with two gold medals around her neck: the YAIAA Class AAA singles championship, her second in three years, and the District 3 singles title.

Wagner, the Daily Record/Sunday News YAIAA Division I player of the year, won her first-round PIAA match before falling in the quarterfinals. She also took her team along for the ride to the state tournament, where the Warriors bowed out in the first round.

* * *

What was your favorite moment of the past season?

I feel like it's been so long. Ummmm ... probably the moment I won districts because I knew I would be making it to states. Last year I didn't accomplish that in singles. It took a little bit to realize what happened.

How did you get involved with tennis?

My mom played in high school. My sister played when she was younger. I watched her play, and I thought it looked fun.

If you and your mom played against each other in high school, who would've won?

Gosh ... I'd like to say me, but I don't know. I'm sure she was really good. She's still really good.

If tennis wasn't offered at Susquehannock, what other fall sport would you play?

I used to play soccer, and I really loved that. I would probably do that. I kinda miss that. Soccer would be a good alternative.

Why did you stop playing soccer?

I played with shin splints and felt like I couldn't really do as well as I wanted to because the injury was holding me back. It didn't hurt as much when I played tennis. I didn't plan on stopping forever, it just ended up that way.

After you won the District 3 title, you went to powder-puff practice. How did the game go?

The juniors won. It was exciting. I played safety. It was a fun experience.

If you could pick one song to make for an entrance on gameday, what would it be?

I'm kinda glad they don't do that. I don't know how I feel about that. I feel like tennis isn't a sport you should do that.

Who came up with the idea to write GameTimePA on the fence using tennis balls? How long did it take to put it together the first time?

It was (assistant coach) Aaron Hare's idea, and we all thought it would be cool. It took probably 20 minutes. We had a lot of people helping.

Which professional tennis player (current or past) would you most like to play against?

My idol is Novak Djokovic. It would be cool to meet him and get some tips, 'cause he's No. 1 in the world. That would be cool.

Who would you most want on a doubles team?

I don't know. I feel like the guys hit harder and serve faster and are more fun to watch. But probably Serena Williams. She hits pretty strong.

Have you ever thrown a John McEnroe-esque tantrum on the court? Witnessed one?

I don't really think I have. I can't really get mad. I get mad but not enough to let it get to me. I don't understand why people get frustrated. It gets them down. It's one point. If you let it affect you, it affects you the whole match. The higher up you get (in the postseason), the more mad (opponents) get about little things. It only helps the opposite person. They are pretty much beating themselves.

What's one thing you do that drives your parents crazy?

When I'm just crazy, loud and hyper. They are always like, "Calm down." I have a lot of energy.

What would your dream job be?

Probably a professional tennis player. You'd be doing something you love. It wouldn't seem like a job.

If I stole your iPhone, what would I find on it?

Pictures, lot of music. I like pop, country, rap, everything. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook ... all that good stuff.

What's the best part about the holidays?

Honestly? Just getting off from school. It's always nice to have a good break. And the food.
