Who needs the forward pass?

The York County Tech Spartans sure didn't Saturday afternoon as they slashed and plowed their way to 399 rushing yards and six scores in a 46-20 win over visiting Hanover in a YAIAA Division III football game at McDowell Field.

"We wanted to run the football as much as we could," York Tech coach Doug Wilkinson said. "We didn't throw the ball once. We wanted to run it until they took it away from us. We are an option football team. That's what we are going to do. Run the football until you make us stop."

York Tech (2-4 overall, 2-3 division) took the opening kickoff and never looked back as 5-foot-10, 215-pound bruiser Calvin Savary finished off an eight-play, 61-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge.

The Spartans also got a 40-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Stephaun Montouth in the opening quarter and a 51-yard run from junior quarterback Dalmar Dickson in the second quarter to open up a 24-0 halftime lead.

Dickson finished with a game-high 164 yards on 11 carries while Montouth finished with 77 yards and one touchdown on just three carries. Savary, who had 263 yards and five scores against Fairfield last week, carried the ball a game-high 27 times for 129 yards and also scored a second-half touchdown.

"Calvin had a very good game," Wilkinson said. "Delmar did a real good job of reading and running the football and Stephaun ran hard with the football when we gave it to him. Everybody that touched the football ran well for us. That is a credit to the offensive line. They got off the ball and pushed people around a bit."

Hanover (0-6, 0-5) and its 29-player roster statistically kept up with the Spartans in first downs and total yards, but saw two of its first three possessions end in turnovers. Both of those turnovers led to York Tech touchdowns.

"We just kicked ourselves a bit with the fumble and things like that," Hanover coach Mike Ketterman said. "A lot of times, by the time we hit the third quarter or fourth quarter, our kids are pretty beat. With them running the ball as much as they did, that also takes a lot out of the defense."

A bright spot for the Nighthawks was the passing game -- Hanover threw for 253 yards a week after going off for 309 yards against Eastern York. Junior quarterback Brady Goodfellow completed 11-of-27 passes for 202 yards while junior Zach Sheaffer was 3-for-3 for 51 yards, including a 37-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Dylan Krieger in the final minute of play.

Krieger finished with 6 receptions for 135 yards while junior Ian Brown jitterbugged his way to 124 yards on 16 rushing attempts.

"We were able to establish a run game, that was a bright spot," Ketterman said. "I thought Brown ran the ball well and showed great vision. We're getting there. We'll try to take a couple of things away from this and focus on the positives."
