The Pope John Paul II girls volleyball team won a league and district championship this fall, then went one round into the PIAA playoffs.
Suffice it to say, the 2013 season was a banner one for the Golden Panthers. And the accolades for the team continued Tuesday, when three members of the Pope John Paul II squad were named to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association's Class AA team.
Geena Bevenour, Morgan Shemonski and Nicole Dorman were among the 45 athletes from AA schools in the state named to the all-star team. They were joined from the Class AAA side by Spring-Ford's Josie Swenson and Perkiomen Valley's Cayla Veverka.
Bevenour, a senior setter, and Shemonski, a senior right-side hitter, had been previously accorded first-team honors by the Pioneer Athletic Conference. They and Dorman, a junior outside hitter and second-team All-PAC pick, were key to PJP claiming the PAC-10 and District 1-AA titles this fall, then sweeping District 11 champ Bethlehem Catholic in the PIAA Class AA tournament.
Swenson, a senior right-side hitter, helped Spring-Ford go 6-2 in PAC play and three rounds into the District 1-AAA tournament. She and Veverka, a sophomore outside hitter for the Vikings (3-5 PAC-10), were all-PAC first team selections.
