The best athletes allow their best performances to come out late in the season when things are on the line.

This was the case for a trio of Lebanon County athletes last week, and their efforts earned them honors.

Palmyra cross country runners Miranda Salvo and Calvin Conrad-Kline along with Elco quarterback Jeff Martin all excelled in their season finales Saturday and were named athletes of the week.

For Conrad-Kline, he placed seventh in the PIAA State Championships in 16:38, knocking nearly a half second off his time from a week earlier when he placed fifth in the District Three meet in 17:02. The effort also earned him Male Athlete of the Week honors for the entire region, which consists of Lebanon, York, Hanover and Chambersburg.

On the girls' side, Salvo placed 10th in the AA race in 19:43, which was 50 seconds faster than her time of 20:33 that earned her a 13th-place finish in districts.

The area's Football Player of the Week honor went to Martin, who completed 19 of 28 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-28 season-ending loss at North Schuylkill.
