COLONIAL PARK - Despite about half the team and the coach battling sickness, there were plenty of smiles to go around for the Chambersburg wrestling team on Thursday night.

The biggest was from Trojan senior 113-pounder Tanner Shoap, wo scored a pin to become Chambersburg's all-time wins leader and help his team defeat Central Dauphin East 35-28 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division match.

Shoap raised his record this year to 20-5, and his current career record of 129-23 puts him one ahead of the previous record holder, Jimmy Hughes, who graduated in 2010.

"It's definitely a nice record to have," Shoap said. "I thought it was probably in reach this year, but until the last couple of weeks I didn't really think about it much. I just figured I'd keep taking care of business.

"Probably at the end of the Bock tournament I was talking to coach about it and last weekend he made sure I knew exactly when it could happen."

Shoap wrestled the next-to-last bout on Thursday, with the Panthers holding a 28-26 lead. He stuck Ervin Jones in 1:33 to give Chambersburg the lead, then Garrett Kyner came through with a 4-2 dcecision at 120 pounds to clinch the victory.

Shoap said, "It was nice to do it with a pin, and it helped the team, too. We were missing some guys tonight and we needed the win."

The Trojans (11-3, 4-1 MPC) began the week ranked No. 12 in the District 3 power rankings and the top 16 qualify for the team championships, an event Chambersburg has never competed in.

CD East (5-7, 0-5 MPC) did not make it easy. The Panthers scored big points in several places where Trojan starters were out because of sickness.

In addition to Kyner's win, Calvin O'Farrell (160) also won a two-point decision, 5-3.

Scoring pins for Chambersburg were Garett Hammond (152) and Colin Runshaw (106), while David Rump (126) had a technical fall and Johnnie Hughes (138) and Dontez King (182) notched decisions.

King's opponent, Austin Trephan, came in with a 10-1 record, but King won, 8-3.

Notes: Shoap had records of 31-5 his freshman season, 41-4 in sophomore year and 37-9 last year The 41 wins is a school record for wins in a season He is one of five Chambersburg wrestlers with 100 or more wins.
