Dominating the middle weights, the New Oxford High Colonials won the first six bouts of their wrestling match against the York County Tech Spartans Thursday night on their way to a 54-18 win at New Oxford High School.
With the match starting at 138 pounds, the Colonials picked up bonus points in five of those six bouts to take a 27-0 lead.
Nolan Poust got it started for the Colonials when he posted a 16-1 technical fall over York Tech's Jordan Dehoff. Poust needed only 3:30 to post his 16 points.
New Oxford followed with a major decision from Slade Storm at 145. Storm scored eight points in the third period to earn the bonus point.
Shane Hoff kept it going for the Colonials with a technical fall at 152 pounds over Dylan Hartlaub. Hoff also had a big final period with seven points. The final two came at the final whistle.
Eli Myers was solid at 160 for the Colonials as he turned in a 5-1 decision over York Tech's Camron Stewart. Scoring a takedown, a reversal and a penalty point got Myers the win.
New Oxford continued their dominance when George Bell scored a 12-4 major decision over Kyle Elgenfritz at 170. Again, it was a big third period that gave the Colonials the extra point. Bell was leading 5-3 when he got a reversal, takedown and a 3-point near fall for seven more points and the extra point.
At 182, Charlie Hoffman completed the Colonials' run when he pinned Kyle Chesnavage in 2:48. Hoffman had a 5-0 lead when he ended the bout with the pin.
The Spartans briefly looked like they might get back in the match when they got back-to-back pins at 195 and 220. Jacob Phillips got six points at 195 with his pin of Connor Rhodes in 1:29. Jevenson Villenueva took a little longer at 220 but still got his pin over Trey Altland in 5:53.
Brock Hartman got the Colonials back on track with his 49-second pin of Carlos Rivera to give New Oxford a 33-12 lead.
New Oxford got the winning points when the Spartans had no one to face Mike Rudisill at 106. His forfeit win gave the Colonials a 27-point lead with only four bouts remaining.
Lake Laughman earned a 53-second pin at 113, only to see York Tech's Luke Moscato match it with a forfeit win at 120.
That would be the Spartans' last points as New Oxford took the final two bouts. Guy Nitchman got a technical fall at 126 and Joel Zepp won a wild 20-12 major decision at 132.
Zepp almost blew a 10-2 lead when Gary Hake had him on his back in the third period. Zepp and Hake each scored 10 points in the final period.
"We had a real good effort tonight," Colonials coach Dave Conaway said. "Those bonus points we got early went a long way in winning. Overall, as a team we wrestled really sharp. Tonight was a good springboard to sectionals for us."
While disappointed with the loss York Tech coach Mike Diliberti could reflect on a solid season by his Spartans.
"A lot of our guys are banged up, so we need the break before sectionals start," Diliberti said. "We have 10 wins this year and I think that is more than York Tech has had in the last 20 years."
