The Biglerville High Canners maintained the luster of their highly anticipated regular season-ending wrestling match despite Hanover's Ian Brown having a night to remember on Tuesday night at Biglerville's Pitzer Gymnasium.

Biglerville beat Hanover, 66-9, to set the stage for Thursday's home matchup with Bermudian Springs.

There will be a little extra emotion, and a little more on the line on Thursday, as this edition of "The Backyard Brawl" will serve as a league championship game for YAIAA Division II.

"We work all year, work real hard to get to this point," Biglerville head coach Bob Gano said. "The next three or four matches will determine our success as a dual-meet team."

Despite the lopsided Canner win on Tuesday, Hanover's Ian Brown stole some of the spotlight when he recorded his 100th career win with a 6-0 decision at 138 pounds over Biglerville's Jasper Hankey.

"It's probably the earliest or next-to-earliest to get (100 wins) at Hanover," Hanover head coach Dave Cataldo said of his junior wrestler.

Despite the Canners winning the meet by the time the 138-pound bout started, the final contested match of the night was easily the main event. Brown entered with a 19-2 record, and Hankey came in at 25-2.

The scoring started with a hard-earned two-point takedown by Brown in the first period.

Brown started the second period on the bottom, but 23 seconds later, he fought for a reversal and a 4-0 lead.

With the score 4-0, the pair battled in neutral position for the first half-minute of the third. Finally, Brown gained control of Hankey's ankle with a low attack, but Hankey managed control of Brown's upper body as they hit the mat.

After a few seconds, Brown's head emerged and he gained control for a 6-0 lead. He fought off one more reversal attempt by Hankey and maintained control for the final 42 seconds for the victory.

"On my feet, I felt very confident," Brown said. "Jasper is a longer wrestler than I usually face, so I knew I had to stay farther back and do quick shots."

"(Brown) wrestles well and stays in good position," Cataldo said. "He's always going to be battling for medals at states."

After a PIAA fourth-place finish at 126 last year, Brown is driven by one goal: taking three more steps up on the podium.

"It's definitely a big milestone," Brown said of winning 100, "but it's just another win. The end goal is to be at the top of the podium in March. This is another steppingstone."

This match was the final steppingstone for Biglerville on the way to the match that everyone has been waiting for all year.

"I'd be lying if I didn't say that," Gano said, indicating he's had Thursday's match in the back of his mind all year. "Yeah, when you look within the division, early on you realize that it's going to come down to them (Bermudian) and us. They're good, and we're good. It's who wrestles better that night."

Against Hanover, Biglerville raced out to a 54-0 lead after nine matches, with pins coming in all seven contested matches.

Tyler Lieberum picked up his team-leading 28th win of the year, as opposed to two defeats, by pinning Brad Irvin at 160. Josh Asper, Eric Showers and Joe Hurda all earned pins to make it 30-0.

Wrestling at 220, Biglerville's Nate Mentzer took down Ben Krentler five times before pinning him 44 seconds into the second period.

Hanover's lone pin came from freshman Caleb Garland at 120.
