Bermudian Springs High wrestling coach Dave McCollum can easily point to what went wrong in Saturday night's 33-26 loss to Boiling Springs.

"The turning point was heavyweight," he said after Eagles freshman Brady Linebaugh was pinned. "We thought we were going to win that weight class. Unfortunately, he got cradled, taken over to his back and pinned. He's been outslicking heavyweights. He's much better against stiffer competition.

"That was a biggie. That was a swing match for Boiling Springs. They got lucky there. They got lucky. They got lucky there. It's tough to take that one."

The bout lasted just 2 minutes, 21 seconds, but the impact was enormous. The Eagles carried a slim 12-9 lead into the match, and a win by Linebaugh could've been at least a 9-point swing.

Instead, the Bubblers took a 15-12 lead with the match going into the smaller weights, where they held an advantage.

"This is a win-for-me match to get my confidence back," Davis said. "When I had him pinned, I was so excited. In my mindset, he's not going to major me. I've never been majored in my career, and I'm not going to start tonight."

The match was close at that point because of two strong efforts by the Bubblers. At 160 pounds, John Vaughn scored in the waning moments to avoid a major-decision loss to Colton Dull, saving one team point, and Conner Murphy earned a decision after a last-moment reversal against Jacob Slonaker at 170.

If the Eagles had maintained those leads, they would have provided a seven-point swing, the difference in the final score.

"The other big loss was Jake getting reversed there at 170," McCollum said. "It looked like we were going to win 1-0 there. You got to finish your match. That's something we got to learn from."

The Eagles reclaimed the lead after Linebaugh's loss when 106-pounder Bayley Oberlander pinned John Day in 20 seconds, but the Bubblers scored the next 18 points for a 33-18 lead going into the final two matches.

"To be honest with you, I told our team I didn't expect to lose tonight," McCollum said. "I thought our team was the better team. I felt we could beat them the way we paired up."

Bubblers coach Rodney Wright was disappointed with how Andrew Mellott and Travis Wickard performed in losing two major decisions to end the match.

"We wrestled great all night long until those last two matches," he said. "Why? I know those two kids (for the Eagles) are tough kids. But, hey, my kids are tough, too. I feel that maybe they thought that they didn't need to go out there and pull their end of the bargain like everybody else."

The win appears to give the Bubblers the No. 1 seed in the District 3 Class AA team tournament. They have beaten the Nos. 2 and 3 teams in Biglerville and Bermudian Springs, respectively.

Wright wasn't sure whether he should celebrate.

"Not really that important," he said. "That's the thing about power points, no more voting anymore. I don't know where (Bermudian Springs is) going to fall. We beat Bermudian and Biglerville. I'm going to get Bermudian up in our bracket? OK, that's how it's going to go.

"A lot of things in this sport isn't fair. Me being a coach, I can't control what they do and the decisions they make at the higher end. It's a shame."

The Eagles turn their attention toward Thursday's match against Biglerville, which the Bubblers beat 36-26 while missing strong wrestler Kyle Shoop.

"I'm glad we have five days," McCollum said. "Five days is plenty of time for us to get ready."; 717-637-3736, extension 139; Twitter: @DanielPaulling
