New Oxford High wrestling coach Dave Conaway has seen progress this season -- just not as quickly as he had hoped.

"We're getting better," he said. "You can see they're doing some things out there they need to do. They still need to work on some things. We're young yet."

The youth showed Tuesday night as the Colonials lost 49-26 to Dallastown at New Oxford.

The Colonials trailed by just two points through five matches, 13-11, after 132-pounder Joel Zepp earned a technical fall and 145-pounder Slade Storm earned a pin in 3:43.

However, the Wildcats scored 33 consecutive points behind three pins and a forfeit as the Colonials were without one of their better wrestlers, Charlie Hoffman. Highlighting those wins were Wildcats seniors Cooper Deller and Zaire Lawrence.

"We expect that from them," Wildcats coach Matt Striebig said.

The Colonials (3-5, 3-5 YAIAA I) received a pin from freshman heavyweight Brock Hartman, who showed some of the progress Conaway had mentioned.

His opponent, Wildcats heavyweight Austin Graser, pulled Hartman to the mat, but Hartman used his momentum to roll Graser, earning near fall points.

"He's exciting to watch," Conaway said. "He's got some athletic ability for a big kid. He doesn't get sucked underneath like some heavyweights do. He doesn't get siderolled.

"When he gets in trouble, he knows where his hips are at. There are some heavyweights who never learn that. A lot of that's natural ability. He's like a gyroscope."

Colonials 106-pounder Mike Rudisill earned a pin in 35 seconds, and Lake Laughman added a 4-0 decision to finish New Oxford's 15-0 run. The Wildcats (6-2, 6-2), however, received a forfeit at 120 to end the match.

Despite losing, Conaway is hoping to build momentum toward next season. He's quick to point out the three teams atop the division -- Dallastown, South Western and Spring Grove -- are losing seniors and that he returns a lot of wrestlers.

"I told you beating Dallastown, South Western and Spring Grove would be difficult," Conaway said. "I thought we could be OK after that. We've been OK.

"We were 3-8 last year. If we come out with a winning season, that's a step in the right direction. We'll see. Hopefully we grow and do what we're supposed to do, and you'll see a whole different team when we come back."; 717-637-3736, extension 139; Twitter: @DanielPaulling
