NEWARK, Del. - Both Garett Hammond and Tanner Shoap medaled for the Chambersburg wrestling team at the Beast of the East Tournament on Sunday.

"Anybody that medals in that tournament is pretty tough," Trojan coach Doug Rine said. "There's just so many tough kids; you just have to keep grinding and grinding. You go from one match to the next to the next. There's never any let up in these kinds of tournaments as long as you're wrestling tough."

Hammond and Shoap did just that.

Hammond had the best finish, going 5-2 to place fourth overall. After winning four matches in a row - two of which were by pin - Hammond finally met his match in the semifinals. He lost a close one to Chad Walsh, who got a 10-7 decision. When Hammond moved down to the consolation bracket, he had an easy time taking down Zachary Kelly of the Kiski School, 13-0. But his third place match was another narrow one, and Hammond lost 6-4 to Austin Rose of Central Dauphin.

Shoap had a different ending to his story. It started similarly with the senior getting three dominating victories on Saturday. But he then was pinned by Steven Simpson of St. Marys in 5:35. During the match, Shoap injured his shoulder. Rine allowed him to wrestle a final match, which he won 6-4 over Michael Scheetz of Northampton, ensuring a medal. He then forfeited his final two bouts to earn the eighth spot.

"I think he's fine, but we just didn't want to take any chances," Rine said of Shoap's injury.

The other big standout for the Trojans was freshman Garrett Kyner, who went 4-2 over the weekend.

"He beat some very accomplished wrestlers just to get to the second day," Rine said. "Garrett wrestled aggressively all weekend long, and he's starting to learn how to wrestle smart."

Although Kyner lost by tech fall in his second match on Saturday, he battled back to beat Stephen Ross of Cedar Cliff, 5-0 to make it to Day 2. On Sunday, he won two straight matches, including a pin of Malek Woody in just 2:17, before losing to Bryan Israel.

Collin Runshaw and Colin Hasley both had 2-2 records at the tournament.

Overall, Chambersburg finished 21st overall in a field of 102 teams.

"Overall, it was a real nice team effort," Rine said. "I'm happy with that result. Of course I'm never going to say that we couldn't have done better, because we could have. But from a team perspective, I'm happy with that."
