UWCHLAN - Monday afternoon at Downingtown East High School the Cougars baseball team took care of business in a very professional and efficient manner.

Behind the two-hit, five inning pitching of senior Eric Sigovich and a big two-run first inning home run from Nick Amicon, the Cougars rolled over Oxford 10-0, in a five inning affair. Sigovich struck out eight and walked none in a brilliant effort.

"Eric has been pounding the strike zone all season,' Downingtown East coach Pete Susi said. "He is in a good zone right now and I was happy with the way the kids came out and took care of business early in the game. This was a good win for us coming off an emotional game with Coatesville last Friday.'

Downingtown East (8-2 Ches-Mont, 8-2 overall) got out early against Hornet (3-6, 3-6) starter Davin Axelsson. Kyle Ajjam led off the game with a sharp double to left center and after Ryan Taylor grounded out to second for the first out, Amicon unloaded a long bomb that cleared the left field fence for a 2-0 Cougars lead.

"He threw me a fastball down the middle and I just went after it,' Amicon said. "We talked about getting ready for this game and not taking any team for granted and today to get those runs early really helped us. In this league anybody can beat you.'

With Sigovich in complete control of the Oxford lineup, it was left for the Cougar offense to pile on some runs in the bottom of the third inning off Oxford reliever, Mark Santangelo. Taylor made the first out of the inning but then the flood gates opened.

Amicon drilled a single to center and then Sigovich walked to put men on first and second with one out. Tom Marrollo singled to load the bases and Rob Baxley, who had an RBI single in the first, reached on a fielders choice. Oxford should have turned a double play to end the inning but the Hornets first baseman was drawn off first base by a wide throw. Spencer Zuraski then banged a two-run single that made it a 6-0 game and the Hornets were reeling.

Sigovich allowed just two hits and set the Oxford lineup down one, two, three in the fourth and fifth innings, striking out five of the last six batters.

Downingtown East piled on four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a walk to Amicon, Sigovich was hit by a pitch. Marrollo walked to load the bases and Baxley laced his second RBI and hit of the game. Zuraski then walked and Jesse Alba hit a two-run single that probably should have been caught and the Cougars had a 10-0 lead and the mercy rule went into effect.

"We have worked so hard this off season we don't take any game for granted,' Sigovich said. "And us getting that home run in the first inning from Nick really got us going. Usually when we hit early we keep it going and that is what we did today.'

Oxford, which has played very well early this season under first-year coach Andy Wendle, did not look sharp against the Cougars and Wendle said his team cannot get by playing like that.

"We just did not show up and play defense today,' Wendle said. "But these kids have bought in and worked hard so we just have to get back at it and forget this one.'
