One day before their big YAIAA Division II match against the Biglerville High Canners, the Hanover High Nighthawks faced a match against the York Suburban Trojans that could have been a trap.

No worry.

The Hawks were able to take care of business with a very workmanlike 49-30 win over the Trojans on Wednesday night at Hanover's Hawk House.

"I think the coaches were looking ahead more than the kids," Hanover coach Dave Cataldo said. "It's just another match, and that is just the way we are taking it. We're ready to go. We think we can hang with them."

With the match starting at 126 pounds, the Trojans took their only lead of the night at 6-0 when Hanover didn't send out anyone to face Steve Gomez.

The Hawks, however, quickly took charge of the match by taking the next four bouts. The four wins included three pins and a major decision for 22 points.

Ian Brown, at 132 pounds, got it started when he pinned Suburban's Andrew Toman in one minute and 28 seconds. Brown had a 5-0 lead when he put Toman on his back.

Tyler Shafer (138) followed with a 10-0 major decision over Brady Lauchman to give Hanover the lead for good at 10-6. Shafer had six points in the bout off back points.

Hanover wasn't finished yet with the middle of the Trojan lineup as Brandon Shearer and Ian Wheeler both recorded first-period falls. At 145, Shearer took 1:28 to take care of Liam McWilliams while Wheeler stopped Steve Salcedo in 1:59 at 152.

The Trojans managed to hold off the Hawks for one bout at least when Colin Knaub put Brad Irvin on his back in 2:45. Knaub was leading 4-0 when he ended the bout.

Zach Martin got the Hawks back on track at 170 with the quickest pin of the night. He took only 35 seconds to dispatch Levi Stein.

In perhaps the most entertaining match of the night at 182, Hanover's Robert Shafer held off Suburban's Austin King for a 13-5 major decision.

"The kid that Robert wrestled is pretty good," Cataldo said. "Robert went out and kept moving the whole time, but almost got caught in the third period. He was able to scramble out of it, but looked a little tired at the end."

At 195, Hanover's Derek Wolford built up a 16-0 lead in only 2:27 for a technical fall over Chaim Smith. Twelve of Wolford's points came on back points.

York Suburban got their quickest pin of the night from John Salcedo at 220. He needed only 47 seconds to take Justin Forbes down.

In a battle of two pretty good heavyweights, Suburban's Nick Lucchesi, with a weight advantage, was able to break a 1-1 tie with Hanover's Tony Aguilar with a takedown and pin at 2:59. The pin cut Hanover's lead to 37-24.

That would be as close as the Trojans would get as Sasha Watson added six points at 106 with a pin and Giuliano Graziosi added another six at 113 with a forfeit.

Suburban picked up their final six points from Joe Landau at 120 when he pinned Bryan Deven.

"This was our first home match, and I think the kids were a little nervous," Cataldo said. "It's good we have Biglerville tomorrow night instead of tonight."
