Jeff Delaughter broke Spring Grove's all-time rushing record in the Rockets' 42-19 victory at Northeastern on Friday night.
Entering the game, Delaughter needed a mere 72 yards to surpass the previous record-holder, 1980 graduate Scott Wakeland, who had 2,565 in the books.
Delaughter has rewritten the record book, starting at 2,634 yards -- and still has half of his senior season yet to play.
"I want to congratulate Delaughter," said Spring Grove head coach Russ Stoner. "That's a really great accomplishment for him. Its great for our school district and is great for this football team."
Delaughter had 141 yards on 28 carries Friday and scored three of Spring Grove's six touchdowns.
"He's a tough-nut kid," Stoner said. "He works hard. The kids like to block for him, and you can always count on him."Northeastern kept it close with Spring Grove, going touchdown for touchdown throughout the game until late in the third quarter, when Spring Grove went on a run of three straight touchdowns.
Seth Hildebrand threw for 240 yards on only six completions, including 73-yard and 35-yard touchdown passes to Logan Hall. Hildebrand also found Shey Feulmer down field for a 30-yard touchdown and a 35-yard reception.
The Rocket defense shut down the Bobcat running game, allowing just 82 yards on the ground. Dearious Brown made up 41 yards of that on one touch alone -- the only time a Bobcat broke through the Rocket defensive wall. Brown also scored the last touchdown for Northeastern on a 41-yard pass from Marcus Josey, immediately following his long run down field.
Josey also found David Ankney in the end zone after driving the ball downfield on Northeastern's first possession in the second half, bringing the score to 14-12 and beginning the back-and-forth marathon in the third quarter.
The Bobcats gave up field position multiple times on fumbled bad snaps -- one that went over Josey's head and was recovered at the Bobcats' own 11yard line. Josey was forced to scramble multiple times to avoid giving a safety to the Rockets.
The biggest defensive plays for the Bobcats were the two interceptions in the red zone. Brown stopped a Rocket 82-yard drive with an interception on a big third-and-18 stop. And Jowan Lewis Kearse had a fourth-quarter interception with eight minutes to play.
The Rockets gave up 105 yards in penalties.
After a scoreless first quarter, Delaughter finished a Rocket drive down the field to go up 7-0 early in the second quarter.
Northeastern didn't answer until later in the second quarter when Josey drove the ball 1 yard in for the touchdown.
However, an offsides penalty on Northeastern caused the Bobcats to re-kick the ball (the first attempt was good). The Rockets' Ian Slavin was electric off the snap and sneaked past the Bobcat line to block to second kick, leaving the Bobcats down by one.
The Rockets answered almost immediately, following the Bobcat score to enter the second half up 14-6.
With a back-and-forth third quarter, the Bobcats kept the game within two points until the end of the third quarter. Two touchdowns in the fourth quarter solidified the victory.
